Forge Your Knife in a Day Challenge – March 16, 2018

16 March à 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

This class will be taught in French or English

This class is a gift for a yet to be minted Introductory Blacksmith Class graduate, who actually completes their Introductory Blacksmith Class in the month of February 2018 with us.  We will randomly draw a name, the first week of March.  People who take any of our February 2018 Introductory Blacksmith Classes automatically become eligible.

This class will not be easy and is intended for people who are specifically up for a challenge and wishing to get a good sense of their capabilities at the forge and possibly create a cool knife for yourself.

Prerequisite: Blacksmithing Introductory Class – February 2018 Students Only

This one-on-one class will get moving pretty quickly, as the goal for the day is to hand hammer a blank piece of mono steel into knife shape, grind it, heat treat it and finish it.  The intended knife created for this is class will not require mounty a handle, as the handle is actually fully forged to required shape.   Theory will likely be applied before it’s fully understood and the student will learn by following straight forward steps to forge the knife into shape.

We’ll post pictures of the final product made for those curious to see it.

The class will begin with an overview of the workshop, the tools used and the procedures to use them safely.

All material costs for this class will be paid for by Les Forge de Montreal as a gift.

This is definitely a hands-on class and can be physically demanding.  Having good hammer control and an understanding of working temperatures by colour will be key to your success, but keep in mind if the knives you make in this class are among your first then your absolute best are yet to come.  Absorbing the process is more important than the finished product.

You will be provided with all the tools and safety equipment required to attend the class. Please wear steel-toe footwear and cotton clothing. Do not wear synthetic materials as they tend to melt to the skin when blacksmithing.

Bring your lunch or plan for it to be delivered as there are not many restaurant options in the vicinity.  We have plenty of water at the shop, but we recommend you bring a water bottle as you’ll likely need to refill repeatedly.

Classes are from 9am – 5pm everyday.

Students will also be required to sign our waiver before class begins.

Students can also purchase this class by calling us.  438-386-9182
